I don’t really see the need or even get the opportunity to yell, “Let’s get ready to rumble,” often. Yet, with all eyes on Philadelphia for the WWE’s epic WrestleMania XL and its week’s worth of powerhouse pre and post-wrestling events April 4 through 8, now is the time, brother.
Philly hasn’t seen a WrestleMania in 25 years, so it’s no surprise that locals and out-of-town enthusiasts are packing the Lincoln Financial Field on April 6 and 7 for two long evenings of high-flying, tights-wearing action with a host of the WWE’s biggest-ever superstars. And while WrestleMania XL will definitely host WWE universal champion Roman Reigns battling Cody Rhodes on Sunday night for the grand finale, Rhodes and world heavyweight champion Seth “Freakin” Rollins – on opposing nights at the Linc – will do battle with Reigns and his tag team partner, The Rock for something truly totemic. (I know this stuff isn’t real, but with The Rock too long away from the ring, this is pretty exciting.)
The rest of WrestleMania XL, too, is something to witness with bouts featuring the likes of:
*World Heavyweight Championship Match: Rollins vs. Drew McIntyre
*Women’s World Championship Match: Becky Lynch vs. Rhea Ripley
*WWE Women’s Championship Match: Bayley vs. Iyo Sky
*Intercontinental Championship Match: Sami Zayn vs. Gunther
But honestly, if you don’t catch The Rock at the Linc in battle with the best of 2024, you’re blowing your WrestleMania wad.
However, WrestleMania XL is but a part of the WWE extravaganza weekend. While the WWE World at WrestleMania is at the Pennsylvania Convention Center for the week, the Wells Fargo Center in South Philly crams in two events in one night. April 5’s Friday Night Smackdown and the 2024 WWE Hall of Fame party, the classic matches of April 6’s NXT Stand & Deliver, and then its famed WWE Monday Night RAW on April 8.
So expect more than the usual lot of hard codpieces, teased-high wigs and Day-Glo tights while waiting in line for lunch at Reading Terminal Market.
And remember, like the total eclipse of April 8, if you miss WrestleMania 40 this year, you don’t get it back for another 20 years.
