Anyone can be a weekend warrior when it comes to navigating the intricacies of the 2024 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show. Hardcore plant lovers and flower heads know, however, that the nation’s largest, longest-running, annual horticultural event and fundraiser is best apricated on the weekdays, like one would approach their job, and not a hobby.
With that, 2024’s themed Philadelphia Flower Show – running until Sunday, March 10 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center – “United by Flowers” is a more down-to-earth celebration of the horticultural/gardening communities than was last year’s tech-heavy event. Rather than immerse its exhibitions in disco ball-lit displays and stage FX as they did in 2023, installations such as the grand scale Entrance Garden and its “Edges and Reflections” theme are tied into a more naturalistic light setting to go with its mathematically precise lines of garden ponds, suspended floral clouds, water-mirrored plant life. Here, the concept of edges — where two distinct spaces meet and merge — is where the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show shines at every angle.
To be truly united by flowers means that you have to let nature – and not tech – wash over you.
Here are several other exhibitions to look out for at the 2024 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show.
Jennifer Designs’ America in Bloom
South Jersey’s premier floral event company and its owner-designer Jennifer Reed created a multi-colored, fine sculptural composition dedicated to the kitsch notion of family car travel (dog out back in the open-air convertible, too) throughout the United States and landing on flowers and foliage from across the nation.
Schaffer Designs’ Connected: A Floral Legacy
The family-owned floral servicers from Philadelphia came up with this immersive floating, bright orange mélange that marries “Dry-arid and wet-tropical” environments. Truly, this pops no matter where you stand, within and without.
Robertson’s Flowers & Events’ Harmony in Geometry
From the rings of a tree to the honeycombs of a beehive to the human DNA strand, nature is made up of geometric shapes. To that end, the Robertsons created a Day-Glo geometric extravaganza of petals, fabrics, and other organic materials.
Black Girl Florists’ Cultivating Communal Sanctuaries
The internationally gathered union of Black Girl Florists – the hit of the 2023 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show – return with a colorful connection between Black beauty salons and flower shops (“as nurturing spaces”), complete with old-school dryer chairs, nail stations and quite literally, tons of fresh flowers.
U.S. Geological Survey Team’s Does Your Garden Support Bees?
Well, does it? The Interagency Bee Lab from Laurel, MD, create a woodsy pop-up pagoda-like exhibition of foliage, close-up photos, and hardcore information.
