The Philly Goats fuse dance rap, local street rap and Jersey club music with the help from the production team of Bandmanrill and Mcvertt.
Once again, the merging of street rap over heavy bass and club beats in Philadelphia and New Jersey (and Baltimore, let’s be fair) has become a thing again, and I’m flush with excitement. This isn’t crazy new as Philly’s $loan and SimxSantana have been dropping cuts such as “Trapwoodz” since 2019. 2Rare’s “Cupid Remix” is rough. Zahsosaa’s “Stripper Anthem” hasn’t stopped streaming here. And this winter’s “Me & the Gang” and “Broke Shit” tracks from Philly Goats and the dance craze it has inspired (“shake the shii to the left to the right 😭😭🔥🔥🔥”) makes my heart sing and my knees buckle.
However, when you tie things into the Jersey club rapper-producer team of Bandmanrill and Mcvertt, the game gets bigger as the beats grow deeper and more kinetic.
Their first massive TikTok single, “Heartbroken,” like the Philly Goats jams, have become meme-worthy, as have its follow-ups “BULLET” and “Mr.DontCuffThat.”
Anyone following the progression of where drill has gone (moved to) from its start at Lil Durk’s feet know that dance rap is a better place what with Bandman’s drill-inspired flow when paired with the traditions of Jersey club beat.
Not since the top of the 21st Century with Baltimore-to-Philly club rapper Spank Rock – from the mix CD Bmore Gutter Music to hyper cuts such as “Bump” with local Amanda Blank on his debut album YoYoYoYoYo – has the axis of Baltimore, Jersey and Philadelphia sounded so steamy. Summer is coming and this is all bound to get hotter.
