The 15th annual Kensington Derby and Arts Festival returns on Saturday, May 13th, with a new parade route, a new partner, and the mud pit!
The 15th annual Kensington Derby and Arts Festival returns on Saturday, May 13th, 2023, from 12 pm to 6 pm. The festival features over 200 artists, musicians, performers, food, drink, and a parade of homemade floats. A new parade route spans three miles and takes the floats from the festival start through Fishtown while navigating various obstacles created by participating local businesses before doubling back to the festival grounds for a mud pit finish.
The judged Derby competition has various categories to enter, including Best Art, Best Costume, Best Engineering, Best Breakdown, Media Choice, and Judge’s Choice Award. Registration is free.
New for the 2023 festival, NextFab is partnering to provide technical assistance to teams building sculptures for the Derby. As a part of this partnership, a few selected teams will receive a complimentary three-month membership at NextFab’s facility.
The Kensington Derby and Arts Festival funds East Kensington Neighbors Association’s mini-grant program, which supports local nonprofits and businesses in the neighborhood.
The 2022 festival, despite the heavy rain with high-flying mud, saw thousands of people come out to watch and participate. This year, the Kensington Derby and Arts Festival expects a crowd of over 15,000, rain or shine. For more information or to sign up for the Derby, visit www.kensingtonkineticarts.org.
Sounds like a muddy good time to me.
