Sofia Deleon, founder of El Merkury, a Central American street food concept, has launched Tenango Rum, a premium Guatemalan rum that celebrates her heritage. Tenango empowers Guatemalan culture and redefines the industry. Priced at $49.99, this single-source rum honors tradition and excellence.
At the heart of Tenango is the story of Deleon’s great-grandmother, a distiller of traditional Guatemalan moonshine called Cusha. Inspired by her entrepreneurial spirit, Deleon founded Tenango to reshape global perceptions of rum and create a positive impact on Guatemalan women and their families. “I believe that culture and heritage should be at the heart of every sip,” Deleon asserts, highlighting her mission to intertwine tradition with modern rum-making.
Authentically crafted in Guatemala, Tenango is a sustainable and culturally rich spirit. The rum, available in a 750ml bottle at 80 proof, is distinctively adorned with vibrant covers hand-woven on traditional foot looms by a Guatemalan Kik’che’ Women’s co-op. This initiative supports local craftsmanship and contributes $2 from every bottle sold to the co-op’s trade workers.
