South Philly comes alive with the vibrant spirit of the Saint Nicholas Italian Festival. Celebrate rich culture, great foof delights, and timeless music.

The rhythm and vibrancy of South Philadelphia will once again be felt this Sunday, October 1, 2023, as the Saint Nicholas Italian Festival takes over the 1700 Block of South 9th Street. Rooted in a tradition that spans over a century, the Saint Nicholas Italian Festival remains a testament to the Italian diaspora’s enduring cultural and community ties in the city.

The event traces its origins to the early 1900s, celebrated at the St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church, established in 1912 by Italian immigrants. They yearned to preserve their homeland connections, faith, and family values.

Starting at 12:00 noon, the Saint Nicholas Italian Festival promises a cultural extravaganza. The streets will come alive with a procession celebrating iconic Catholic saints, accompanied by the musical strains of the Verdi Band’s traditional Italian marches. For the hungry, many Italian food vendors, including Marra’s Pizza, Termini Bros Bakery, Esposito Porchetta, and more, will showcase a tempting array of Italian culinary treasures. Indulge in Arancini, Broccoli Rabe, Meatball Sandwiches, and Italian Cakes and Desserts.

Entertainment won’t be lacking either. From the East Passyunk Opera Project’s enchanting performances to the traditional moves of The Vivaci Dancers, the festival promises a delightful sensory experience. Not to miss is the “That’s Amore: The Great Italian-American Songbook” segment, which pays homage to Sinatra’s classic hits. The evening crescendos with City Rhythm’s “Love Train Dance Party” and a tribute to Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons by Lights Out.

This year, the festival bears a poignant undertone. It pays tribute to the late Bobby Rydell, Charlie Gracie, and Jerry Blavat, who tragically passed away within a nine-month span last year. Their significant contributions to the festival and the broader community will be commemorated at 5:00 p.m.
