Born and raised there or imported? Born and raised in North Philly (spent time in Germantown and West Oak Lane). Central High School and Ursinus College graduate. Also, I did live in Collegeville (Montgomery County) for 10 years.
What is your connection to your current city? Philly is my heart, my home and made me the tenacious person that I am. Being from North Philly is a badge of honor and I take that with me everywhere. I’ve traveled all over the world and had some amazing experiences working with publications like GQ and Esquire. And, during interviews – I always made sure people knew that I was from Philly. For the majority of my editorial content, Philly is always my backdrop.
What’s your favorite restaurant? You can always catch me at Prunella on 13th and Sansom. But, recently Dear Daphni in Rittenhouse has impressed me to the highest degree. Chef’s kiss of Mediterranean cuisine.
Best place to shop? If you’re shopping for food, don’t sleep on The Asian Market in Chinatown or the New Spring Garden market. Lagos in Rittenhouse has some of the best jewelry that I’ve worn and makes the perfect gifts. The pieces have the right amount of character, style and can elevate your aesthetic. Damari, Maison Braun and Commonwealth Proper are great Philly staples for menswear. But, some of my other favorites are Lapstone & Hammer, P’s & Q’s, Juniors and the 1916 Company (watches). Also, hit up Perfumology and step up your fragrance game.
What is your one favorite “best kept secret” about your city? Something that you and only a few others know about but everyone should? During the warmer months, make a visit to the Rodin Museum on a Friday evening, after 4pm. They set up Parisian-style fare, where you can order baguettes, wine and there’s typically a DJ spinning during that time. It’s the perfect way to feel transported to France – right in the heart of the city.
What makes your city, your city? What does Sabir M Peele absolutely love about it? Philly is truly a city with so much culture, art, music, food and people that truly have big hearts. We’re full of grit and that Philly dawg mentality drives me daily.
