National Escargot Day is approaching, and Philadelphia has a few options for those with adventurous taste buds.
Escargot has been considered a luxurious delicacy throughout history, initially introduced in France during the time of King Louis XIV. Chefs worldwide have since prepared their elevated versions of this dish. On Wednesday, May 24th, various restaurants and bars in Philadelphia will celebrate National Escargot Day by serving unique takes on this fancy French dish. Here are a few options for those inclined to dine on the snail.
The Dutch restaurant offers a Mediterranean twist on the French dish Escargot. However, the dish is only available as a starter on their seasonal dinner menu called “The Dutch After Dark”, created by chef-owners Lee Styer and Kevin Watters.
Forsythia has a rotating menu of contemporary French dishes, including their signature Escargot dish. This dish features chartreuse-almond butter, pickled red onions, and bergamot croûton.
Royal Boucherie features an ultra-authentic, indulgent take on the French delicacy in honor of National Escargot Day with its freshly-minted Escargot à L’ail Noir comprised of black garlic braised Escargot, ratatouille, pansies, and crispy garlic. In addition, Escargot à L’all Noir is highlighted on Royal Boucherie’s brand-new all-day menu.
Chef Townsend Wentz’s restaurant and bar, Townsend EPX, features a menu highlighting French delicacies and ingredients. One of the starters on the menu is the Escargot, made with roasted garlic risotto and sorrel vermouth cream, which can be ordered separately or as part of the seasonal prix fixe tasting menu.
National Escargot Day is not a day for fast food, so slow down and indulge in this delicacy. But I wouldn’t move at a snail’s pace. Make your reservations now.
