Here is a short list of where you can indulge in one of Philly’s global treasures on National Cheesesteak Day.
National Cheesesteak Day is March 24th. While the world-famous spots tend to get all of the recognition, and deservedly so… There are few other notable and underrated vendors beyond Pat’s and Geno’s that are making delicious and deserve some attention.
CO-OP Restaurant and Bar’s “CO-OP Cheesesteak” is constructed with ribeye steak, caramelized onions, and cheese sauce all stuffed in a toasted long roll served alongside their Fancy Fries sprinkled with a unique seasoning blend.
Gaul & Co. Malt House features a “Wit-or-Witowski” Kielbasa Cheesesteak is made with locally sourced kielbasa and golden caramelized onions atop Cooper Sharp cheese sauce, is served on a long roll or can be upgraded to the “Good Day” variant by adding egg and fried mozzarella.
Joseph’s Pizza Parlor uses USDA prime-grade beef from B&M Philly Steaks for their cheesesteaks and is served on locally sourced seeded or unseeded rolls alongside pickles and cherry peppers, and don’t forget the fried onions.
Red Owl Tavern offers its take on the classic cheesesteak, topped with melted Cooper Sharp American Cheese and fried onions, served with a choice of fries, cheese fries, or salad.
Square 1682’s Cheesesteak comes with fried onions and Cooper Sharp cheese piled high atop an Amoroso roll.
Rounding out the list is MilkBoy on Chestnut Street and South Street’s signature Philly Cheesesteak is made with premium La Frieda ribeye beef, sharp American cheese, Tommy sauce, and fried onions served on a Liscio’s seeded Italian roll. Their Chicken Cheesesteak is topped with long hots aioli, fried onions, and sharp provolone all atop an exquisite Liscio’s hoagie roll. Milkboy also offers a vegan option with its Cauliflower Cheesesteak, compiled with garlic aioli, grilled wild mushrooms, fried onions, and Yards BeerWhiz.
