The More Than Words exhibit at NoName Gallery invites viewers to delve into the subtle narratives that shape our perception of the world and ourselves. Engaging with a vibrant array of voices, symbols, words, and expressions encourages guests to reflect on how these elements influence our daily experiences and choices. This exhibition showcases the distinctive artistic styles and backgrounds of its contributors, creating a dynamic conversation about the role of art in understanding and expressing the human condition. Guest-curated by Kim Pepper of Avec Art Consulting, this group exhibition brings together the works of Deb Lawrence, Scott Troxel, Brian Golden Dovie, and Nicholas Megalis.
With a background in clinical psychology and experience as a child psychologist, Deb Lawrence’s paintings are intricate mindscapes that celebrate the soulful beauty of human imperfections. Her work in the exhibit underscores the struggle to feel comfortable in our own skin, presenting a nuanced dialogue between the abstract and the figurative.
Chicago-based artist Brian Dovie Golden uses his art to provoke thought and conversation around race, gender, pop culture, and mental health. His emotionally charged pieces serve as a gateway for viewers to confront and engage with pressing societal issues, underscored by his graphic design and multimedia production expertise.
Scott Troxel’s award-winning, retro-futurist wooden sculptures draw inspiration from mid-century modernism and outdated technology. Through his three-dimensional works, Troxel evokes a sense of nostalgia while simultaneously inspiring a positive outlook toward the future, illustrating the abstract forms of objects and emotions with dynamic creativity.
Known for his visual artistry, direction, and viral music, Nicholas Megalis brings a unique narrative to the exhibition through paintings that feature peculiar phrases. Megalis’s work champions embracing individuality, encouraging viewers to find universal meaning and acceptance in his art.
