James Oliver Gallery presents “Male Gazing,” a solo exhibition by Matthew Borgen, opening on Saturday, September 14th, with an artist’s reception from 6 pm to 9 pm.
Akron, Ohio-born Matthew Borgen has established himself as a well-known artist and curator in Philly since 2003. His artistic journey has seen his work exhibited across regional and national venues, including The Woodmere Art Museum, The Fleisher Art Memorial, and The Urban Institute for Contemporary Art.
In “Male Gazing,” Borgen reanalyzes art from 20th-century comic books and panels to place the idea of toxic masculinity and white supremacy under the proverbial microscope. Borgen composes a satirical yet intelligent commentary on these ideologies’ psychological and emotional underpinnings.
“Male Gazing” leverages humor and satire, much like the work of Honoré Daumier, Thomas Nast, or The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, to address serious themes without downplaying the real issues. His goal is not to provide easy answers but to encourage viewers to engage in thoughtful discourse and face challenging conversations with an open mind.
“Male Gazing” invites the public to explore these complex themes through an accessible yet provocative artistic lens. The exhibition will be on view through November 2nd.
