The Queen of Hip Hop Soul, Mary J Blige, meets Questlove, Black Thought and Co. at the first live Roots Picnic since 2019.
The Rams victory was great, and those Dr. Evil commercials were fun, but the best part of Sunday’s Super Bowl was its Dr. Dre-led halftime show with 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, drummer Anderson .Paak, Eminem and, its lone female performer, Mary J Blige. Hearing her belt out “No More Drama” was better than any touchdown.
So, then, for Blige’s first post-Super Bowl LVI booking, she’ll join Super Bowl National Anthem singer Mickey Guyton in the first live The Roots Picnic since 2019 at The Mann in Fairmount Park on the weekend of June 4 – 5, 2022.
A special fan club presale goes live today, February 15 at 10 am ET, while general on-sale begins on Friday, February 18th at 10 am ET. Weekend or limited single-day tickets will be available as well as VIP packages and can be purchased HERE.
As in the past The Roots and Live Nation Urban have worked together to present the very best of R&B, hip hop, rock, funk and more (country with Guyton, Africana with Wizkid, both first-time visitors to the Picnic) as well as a host of events geared toward Black culture, media, politics, lifestyle and cuisine.
To go with Mary J Blige, Mickey Guyton, Wizkid and The Roots, the two-day bill will feature Philly’s own Jazmine Sullivan (her date in March at The Met Philadelphia is sold out, so here is your chance to catch her), Tierra Whack, Freddie Gibbs, Kamasi Washington, Summer Walker, Kirk Franklin, the J Period Live Mixtape session featuring Black Thought, Rick Ross, G Herbo, Mickey Guyton, Muni Long, Questlove’s Soulquarians Jam Session featuring Keyshia Cole, SWV, and Musiq Soulchild, and more. There will be live podcasts of Million Dollaz Worth of Game, Questlove Supreme, and more, and the Picnic’s concourse hosts various activations and engagements, ranging from film to social justice.
“After a long two years, we are excited to announce the return of The Roots Picnic to Philly with two days of music and culture at the Mann at Fairmount Park,” says Shawn Gee, President of Live Nation Urban, The Roots manager, and co-founder of the event in an email statement.
“This year, Black Thought, Questlove and I attempted to curate a lineup that broke through the genre barriers that often separate us in black culture. To be able to book Mickey Guyton, Kirk Franklin, G Herbo, Wizkid, Wallo & Gillie, and Mary J Blige on the same lineup was a dream come true.”
Plus, to bring “The Roots Picnic” worldwide, YouTube will serve as the exclusive host for the festival. It will stream live on the group’s Official YouTube Channel.
