Born and raised there or imported? Los Angeles born and raised. First of my kind: an East Coast spirit as my dad is from Bronx, NYC and my mom is from West Philly. Grew up between the three. My style is a mix of all three all tied together with the love of music from rap to rock ‘n’ roll.
What is your connection to your current city? Home. These days it’s my band and an emphasis on the music culture here in LA. It has been gigging on the legendary Sunset Strip. It’s special to walk in the footsteps of other great musicians before me. Drive the same streets and see the same sights as other great artists. It’s dope to be older and find myself in situations that bands like Guns N’ Roses would be in or would go to the same spots
What’s your favorite restaurant? Can’t even lie to you… My lady, AtM, is one of the best chefs I’ve ever had the pleasure of dining with. There’s really no other options to be taken seriously these days. If I do eat outside… Philly’s Best Cheesesteaks. The Boiling Crab’s lemon pepper shrimp (You gotta ask ’em to add the lemon pepper). Lala’s when you’re sick of Bossa Nova. Rainbow Bar & Grill for the vibes.
Best place to shop? Been super heavy in my thrifting bag lately. It’s fun to pick through the clothes like records at a record shop and learn the timeline of styles and specific cuts. It’s like no matter how much you see there’s always new batches of heat. Big fan of the Echo Park area and the vibes in the shops over there. Been spending more time in Burbank and Pasadena. Love Traffic Los Angeles in the Beverly Center.
What is your one favorite “best kept secret” about your city? Something that you and only a few others know about but everyone should? The outskirts of town are getting cooler and cooler and there’s slowly no reason to be in your typical places. Get lost in the burbs’ book stores and pawn shops. And there is mad Eagles fans! You definitely feel the energy from Philly here. Go birds!
What makes your city Jordan Beckford’s city? What do you absolutely love about it? There’s no duplicating LA’s film culture and history. You can really see it all up close and personal in one place. My city is different because it’s seen as the destination rather then the complex group of neighborhoods it’s truly is. People come and are quickly immersed into LA’s chaotic and flashy energy but also began to see the culture of being native here and just existing within it all. I love how much access to subculture we have here. There’s a professional reference and resource for almost every medium or genre here. It really leaves it all up to you to connect the dots.
