Name: John Wind
Occupation: Artist and Designer.
Current city: Philadelphia.
Born and raised there or imported? Imported at a very young age from Jerusalem, Israel.
What is your connection to your current city? I grew up in the ‘burbs, went to Penn, and after two years of art school in London, came back and never looked back!
What’s your favorite restaurant? Suraya. It’s gorgeous, delicious, and evokes the perfect mix of Philly style and my Israeli heritage.
Best place to shop? Cork, the little wine and gift shop at 253 South 20th Street, is a chic neighborhood gem that has unique wines and equally tempting non-alcoholic drinks, barware, seasonal goodies, etc. I love going there and always leave with something.
What is your one favorite “best kept secret” about your city? Friends and Family. My home and my studio. Relationships that have lasted for decades, like my 30 plus year connection with Joan and Ellen Shepp. Deep roots and continual reinvention — both me and the city.
Something that you and only a few others know about but everyone should? The art scene in Philly is exceptional, and a really unique mix of global and local. From the blue chip Philadelphia Museum of Art and Barnes to artist-driven spaces like Vox Populi, InLiquid and Tiger Strikes Astroid, there is something for everyone. And as an artist, there are so many ways to get your work out there. You have to work for it, but the art world is small enough to be accessible yet big enough to offer options.
What makes your city John Wind’s city? What do you absolutely love about it? It’s a badge of honor that I can almost always find street parking! And while I know we have serious problems that don’t have easy solutions, I love Philly’s underdog determination and civic pride.
