Imani Roach has been named the inaugural director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s newly established Brind Center for African and African Diasporic Art. This marks a pivotal expansion in the museum’s dedication to showcasing a broader spectrum of global art, specifically from Africa and its diaspora. Returning from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Roach brings her extensive expertise and passion to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, promising to infuse new energy and perspective into its offerings.

The Brind Center, announced in 2022 and generously endowed by Trustee Ira Brind, aims to enhance the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s collection, which spans artworks across Africa, the Americas, and the African diaspora. As the curatorial director, Roach will oversee the acquisition of new artworks, spearhead special exhibitions and gallery installations, and coordinate related publications and symposia. Her role extends beyond curatorial duties as she actively engages with the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Learning and Engagement Division and collaborates with similar institutions globally.
