The sweaty, sexy, dirty rocking Low Cut Connie and its singer-pianist Adam Weiner are such a fixture of Philadelphia that to start a radio show of its own, The Connie Club, only seems logical. And while The Connie Club has already started airing in other markets as part of its production arrangement with The Current’s David Safar and Jim McGuinn, debuts in Philly on WXPN FM (88.5 FM) tonight at 10:00 pm, with a party to celebrate its sound at Lucky’s Last Chance in Queen Village that starts at 9:00 pm.
Along with playing congenial homespun host to musical pals and tour mates such as New Orleans’ bounce queen Big Freedia, singer Caroline Rose, The Pogues’ Cait O’Riordan and more, Weiner will play his junky piano Shondra, spin platters and generally act as if hes doing as much in a saloon such as Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar or Lucky’s Last Chance.
“I came up in this entertainment world performing in all kinds of weird funky little bars and meeting some of the most brilliant and bizarre sexy weirdos you can imagine,” said Adam Weiner.” I wanted to capture that open-hearted, wild divey bar vibe in a radio format, and here is my attempt.. the CONNIE CLUB. Everyone is welcome.”
