A new destination for Taco Lovers opens with an American twist at Hi-Lo Taco in Midtown Village.
Hi-Lo Taco, initially a popular pop-up in Fishtown, has now established a full-service restaurant at 1109 Walnut Street under the passionate guidance of Chef-Owner Jeff Newman. At the heart of Hi-Lo Taco’s philosophy is a simple yet powerful concept: a fun, American-style taco bar where everyone can relax and savor meticulously handcrafted, made-to-order dishes. This new eatery marries exceptional ingredient sourcing and chef-driven techniques with a laid-back atmosphere, inviting diners to indulge in a memorable dining experience.
Hi-Lo Taco’s menu is a testament to Newman’s nearly two decades of culinary expertise, blending his love for BBQ, fire, and smoke with fine dining quality in an accessible format. The menu extends beyond the beloved breakfast tacos from the Fishtown pop-ups, introducing ten additional tantalizing taco varieties like Guajillo BBQ Chicken, Smash Burger, and Mushroom Asada. Each taco, priced from $4.75, is a flavor-packed delight, with corn tortillas available upon request.
The breakfast tacos remain a highlight, featuring combinations like Burnt Ends, Chorizo, and Mushroom, each melding flavors with Abundantly Good white cheddar. Beyond tacos, Hi-Lo tantalizes taste buds with crispy heirloom corn tortilla chips, assorted bowls, salads, smoked wings, and tostadas, offering a variety for every palate.
In a commendable move towards community support and sustainability, Hi-Lo Taco contributes to local hunger relief and drug prevention initiatives, embodying the spirit of giving back. Their beverage menu is equally impressive, boasting additive-free tequila and mezcal, draft beers, wines, and innovative cocktails, including the unique Chupito pairings and the “Boot + a Beer” special.
The restaurant’s ambiance is enhanced by the artistic collaboration with local artist Patty Crash, featuring a custom stained glass piece that adds a vibrant touch to the setting. Hi-Lo Taco embraces a modern dining approach with a hybrid service model, blending the convenience of QR code ordering with the warmth of traditional service.
Sustainability is a key value, reflected in their seating choices made from recycled materials. With plans to expand their offerings with lunch and a breakfast taco takeout window, Hi-Lo Taco is not just a restaurant but a movement redefining casual dining with a focus on quality, community, and sustainability.
Jeff Newman’s gratitude towards the local community and Hi-Lo fans is palpable, and he eagerly anticipates welcoming both newcomers and loyal patrons to experience the reinvented Hi-Lo Taco. As Newman aptly puts it, “For those who haven’t tasted our handmade flour tortillas yet, you’re in for a treat.”
