Philly’s Tierra Whack, Full Bush and PNB Rock drop new EP releases to ride out the weekend.
As we head into the first of winter’s bitter cold weekends, there is a small handful of releases, all proudly Philleeeee, that should serve in place of raging fireplaces or rich whiskies. With that, I would like to dedicate this page, today, to the late great Philadelphia-born Kal Rudman, the legendary founder and publisher of the famed Friday Morning Quarterback (FMQB) music radio-industry “tip sheet” and Lucille, his wife of 63 years, both of whom passed away within hours of each other this week.
For example…
After dropping her groundbreaking, long length project, Whack World and its 15 one-minute vignettes, back in 2018, Philly’s Tierra Whack finally returns to the EP format, with Rap? today, Friday, December 3. Along with releasing Rap?, Whack is debuting her first-ever Vans collaboration executed in collaboration with her stylist Shirley Kurata. Together, the threesome curated a 1980s-inspired collection, what she is calling a “mélange of colors, shapes, patterns, and phrases that explores limitless creativity.” The set will include four styles of footwear and ten apparel pieces, all bearing a signature mantra: “Weird Hype And Creative Kids” – “WHACK” for short. Though three songs short – “Stand Up”, “Meagan Good” and “Millions” – Rap? packs a weird hype punch (see how I did that?) with “Stand Up,” in particular, showing off Whack’s knack for anthem making. “Stand Up,” also comes an accompanying visual, directed by Daniel Brennan and shot in her hometown of Philadelphia. Dig.
Another short, sharp stick – this one harder, crunchier and from a post-punk Philly aesthetic – comes courtesy the local Full Bush, and its Movie Night (EP) from Brutal Panda Records. I’ll have more to say about the Philly quartet closer to their upcoming live shows. For now, however, know that the Bikini Kill-inspired EP, their second effort (recorded, mixed, mastered, and produced by Dave Downham of Beach Slang, fame) at Gradwell House Recording in Haddon Heights, NJ is rife with aggro-emotionalism, hooky hardcore melodies and a story connected to “one long walk home after The Dolphin… phone calls you get in the middle of the night when you know something is wrong… and how love can be your savior but can also make you feel so utterly lost,” they write in their press statement. Dag.
Then there’s PNB Rock’s 2 GET U THRU THE RAIN EP, the follow up to his “High” track and its 5 billion video views on Tik Tok. Lil Baby, Luke Nasty and Young Thug are all over the R&B PNB Rock rapper’s new joint. The entire RAIN package is a hearty, heavy 6 songs long (and yeah, includes “High”), and acts as a dense appetizer to the full meal of his upcoming release show to be held in his hometown, December 18 at The Fillmore Philadelphia.
