Fundraising efforts for Philly’s Derek Dorsey continue with the We Live On musical event at the Ardmore Music Hall.

Back in March, dosage MAGAZINE and I discussed the case of Derek Dorsey, Philadelphia live music entrepreneur, booking agent, curator, manager, bike person, friend and all-around good guy, and how he was immediately felled by a rare neurological disease (trigeminal neuralgia), had to stop work, faced daily and continuous excruciating pain and was in need of both financial and medical assistance.

With that, Jesse Lundy, also a Philly-based band manager and fellow live booker, leapt in to action to create, We Live On, and its varying series of events at Ardmore Music Hall focusing, separately, on all of the musical genres that Dorsey covered. Which was mostly all of them, when you consider how Dorsey revolutionized jam band nights and singer-songwriter soirees at his one-time Girard Avenue, home away from home, The Fire.

“Derek’s a bud to the music scene forever,” Jesse Lundy told me back in March. “This scene is but a small group of people and dude needs help from all of us… Because he’s got roots in all live music in the area, Derek’s the one who got these artists to do this. Not because he pushed, but because he is who he is to this community. Call it a royal command performance. Everyone wanted in. Everybody wants to support brother Derek.”

Karl Jenkins AKA Dice Raw

Six months after March’s start, Derek Dorsey is still in the hospital, still in the throes of what he told me is “an ever-evolving horrible journey,” and still needs the financial aid of the community that he’s served throughout his entire adult life.

To that end, this Friday, August 26’s edition of “We Live On” at Ardmore Music Hall is subtitled “The Money Making Boys” and featured renowned Philadelphia rappers Karl “Dice Raw” Jenkins, Peedi Crakk and Truck North. Along with Philly’s hip hop finest, the August 26 live party/benefit will double as a reunion showcase for the local Burndown All Stars with Chris and Herb from Fathead featuring Flipside, Supreem and the New Experience, Roi Lush, Miggs Son Daddy and more.

Dorsey wrote to me himself and told me that this event will be “incredible,” so that ringing recommendation seals the deal.
