Name: Denise Nakano
Occupation: KYW Newsradio Anchor.
What is your connection/relationship to Philly? I fell in love with Philadelphia immediately after arriving to take an anchor/reporter position with NBC10. That was more than 17 years ago! I have lived on both the east and west coasts, but Philadelphia has been the only place that truly felt like home to me. The people, the tight-knit neighborhoods and the city’s passion reminds me of my immediate family. Philly has become my family.
Favorite restaurant in Philly? My favorite restaurant is Bleu Sushi in Washington Square West. A news story first brought me there and I’ve been hooked ever since. They even have a robot named Bleu that hands take-out to customers to help with social distancing during the pandemic.
Best place to shop in Philly (food, clothes, gifts, jewelry, etc). Select one? I turn to the Reading Terminal Market for my one stop shopping needs, from getting gifts and fresh produce to grabbing a bite to eat. It’s the place where I have spent the entire day forgetting how much time has passed, while coming away with a full stomach and shopping bags in both hands.
What is your one favorite “best kept secret” about Philly? Something that you and only a few others know about but everyone should… The hidden gem of Philadelphia is Smith Playground and Playhouse in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of Fairmount Park. Smith is a unique and treasured resource for unstructured, creative, and integrated free play for underserved communities in the city.

What makes Philly your Philly? What do you absolutely love about the city? There is a loving, passionate and unapologetic grit about the city and those who call Philly home. You know exactly where you stand, for good or bad and I just love that.
