DJ and Promoter David Pianka is Making Time again in Philly at Fort Mifflin national landmark at Philly’s Hog Island.
Since the year 2000, DJ, promoter, provocateur and all-around Philadelphian David Pianka has been hosting the mind and body freeing, freak-out dance event Making Time, a deliciously groovy series of party jams at various locations around the Philly area for discerning electronic music aficionados.
Sometimes that has focused on legendary bands directly connected to kinetic, post-punk funky new wave such as Liquid Liquid, The Strokes, Interpol, Block Party and LCD Soundsystem whose founder, James Murphy has also DJ-ed many a wild Making Time’s aqua-boogie affair. Sometimes that has meant several floors of a warehouse with separate moods and different decadent dance vibes.
What has been happening, more as time goes on and we age, Pianka’s Making Time has focused on more transcendental experiences for his events. What that means for the September 24 and 25 weekend is “an ethereal, one-of-a-kind futuristic music festival experience” – this time housed-and-happening at the historic Fort Mifflin national landmark at Philly’s Hog Island. This American Revolutionary War-for-Independence fort along the banks of the Delaware River is a perfect space in which to host a massive electronic music lineup, one “transforming the unique grounds into a magical and transcendental space where futuristic musical transcendence can be achieved through transcendental futuristic sounds, light, projections and installations by Ricardo Rivera’s iconic Klip Collective.” That’s Pianka speak for, this Making Time is going to be epic among, underground dance music experiences.
While the visuals are taken care of, and assuredly wow-ful, it is the experimental electronic music that will keep you at Fort Mifflin and Making Time. And this time, that means the muscular rhythms, woozy melody and electric, ambient overdrive of Four Tet, British programmer/sequencer/composer Kieran Hebden’s long-time electro outfit.
