“Cool Under Pressure”, a dual exhibit at James Oliver Gallery, is a meeting ground for Don Bell and John Y. Wind’s unique interpretations of heroism and humanity.
The James Oliver Gallery has opened its doors to the riveting two-artist exhibit, “Cool Under Pressure”, featuring Emmy Award-winning journalist and visual artist Don Bell and the multifaceted John Y. Wind. Through unique compositions, both artists explore how everyday heroes and common experiences can be monumental. This exhibit, a testament to resilience, is on view from November 4th, 2023, until January 27th, 2024.
Amidst the whirlwind of headlines and the hustle of holidays, “Cool Under Pressure” is a tranquil enclave that offers insight into human resilience and heroism. Here, artifacts of genuine courage are captured in plaster, and poetic representations on film shed light on the heroism found in everyday life. The underlying theme is clear: despite the ordinary or tumultuous events surrounding us, we remain “Cool Under Pressure”.
Don Bell, a visual artist recognized globally, particularly by Vogue Italia and Iconic Artist Magazine, captures portraits rich in narrative experiences. He uncovers layers of defiance, vulnerability, and unyielding truth, majorly spotlighting the myriad facets within communities of color. Bell’s photos allow viewers a guilt-free glimpse into the worlds of others – encouraging understanding, growth, and cultural exposure. While he focuses on authenticity over the artificial in this series, his professional journey extends beyond the canvas. Many will recognize Bell as the Sports Director and lead Sports Anchor at CBS News Philadelphia.
John Y. Wind, who hails from Israel but was brought up in Philadelphia, layers his artworks with fragments from his past. As the co-founder and chief designer of John Wind Jewelry, he seamlessly merges the domains of art, commerce, and portraiture. In this exhibition, Wind introduces us to his series, “Monuments to Everyone”, where he replaces historical bronze and marble gods with accessible symbols of modern life. Another highlight is “Whiskey Rebellion”, a collection rooted in the figurines of the 1960s that delves into themes of masculinity, heroism, and the act of remembrance through a contemporary lens.
To truly comprehend the magic that “Cool Under Pressure” emanates, one must witness the masterpieces crafted by these artists firsthand. Bell’s evocative portrayals and Wind’s poignant series create a resonating dialogue that urges viewers to contemplate the heroes among us.
The opening reception for the exhibit is scheduled for Friday, November 4th, from 6 to 9 p.m.
