“Catherine Goodman: Silent Music” opens on January 30 at Hauser & Wirth New York, showcasing the latest large-scale paintings from the British artist Catherine Goodman. Known for her expressive brushwork and dynamic surfaces, Goodman’s art serves as a canvas for her emotional energy and personal memories, drawing viewers into a rich tapestry of experience and feeling.

Born in 1961 in London, Goodman possesses a strong commitment to social justice and education. In 2000, she co-founded The Royal Drawing School with HM King Charles III to provide subsidized education to disadvantaged youth. Her advocacy extends to organizing drawing classes for individuals facing homelessness and mental health challenges. Moreover, Catherine Goodman often draws from her familial experiences, frequently depicting her sister Sophie, who grapples with multiple health conditions, as a recurring subject in her evocative works. In recognition of her significant contributions to art and education, she was honored with a CBE in 2024.

Goodman’s artistic process involves a daily drawing practice that connects her observations with her inner world. Her recent pieces frequently commence with meaningful landscapes or portraits, which she then intricately layers into abstract compositions. Works such as “Lago” (2024) and “Pahari Picnic” (2024) encapsulate substantial memories and emotions, characterized by their thick, layered paint that creates a compelling physical presence.

“Catherine Goodman: Silent Music” at Hauser & Wirth New York opens on January 30 and will exhibit through April 12, 2025.
