The Calder Gardens is set to open its doors in September 2025, nestled along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. This cultural destination will unite the art of Alexander Calder with innovative architecture and lush landscapes. With a building designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Herzog & de Meuron and gardens crafted by landscape designer Piet Oudolf, Calder Gardens will offer an immersive space where art, nature, and reflection converge.
Born in Pennsylvania, Alexander Calder, was one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century, redefined modern art with his innovative mobiles and monumental outdoor works. Calder’s career spanned decades of groundbreaking contributions to the art world. Calder Gardens will honor this legacy by serving as an intimate space for visitors to engage deeply with his art, offering rotating displays of masterworks from the Calder Foundation. This integration of art, architecture, and landscape design fortifies Calder Gardens as a coming distinctive destination in Philadelphia’s vibrant cultural landscape.
Alexander S. C. Rower, Calder’s grandson, and president of the Calder Foundation, highlighted the unique mission of this project: “Calder Gardens is an entirely new type of cultural institution focused on nurturing introspection and personal growth through the art and ideas of my grandfather.”
The recent announcement also introduced Juana Berrío as the inaugural Marsha Perelman Senior Director of Programs. Berrío, a highly regarded curator, educator, and arts programmer is entrusted with designing public programs that connect communities to Calder’s masterworks. Berrío’s vision aligns with Calder’s interdisciplinary ethos, ensuring that the programming will resonate deeply with visitors. As Thom Collins of the Barnes Foundation—a key partner providing operational and educational support to Calder Gardens—noted, her expertise will “meaningfully engage the community.”
Calder Gardens will officially open in September 2025, with a series of events designed to celebrate its debut. An inaugural program, details of which will be announced closer to the opening date, will invite the public to explore the space and engage with Calder’s art through performances, discussions, and community activities. A full schedule of programs will continue throughout the year.
