Brandon J. Donahue-Shipp returns to Pentimenti Gallery for a solo exhibition this fall. “Reconstructs” showcases Brandon’s remarkable versatility and deep engagement with both aesthetic and symbolic elements, drawing inspiration from pop art, street art, and the fascinating Art Povera movement.
A graduate of Tennessee State University with a BFA and the University of Tennessee with an MFA, Brandon J. Donahue-Shipp’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, earning him accolades such as the Tanne Foundation Award. His latest works, including paintings on repurposed t-shirts and polytab material, capture fragments of everyday life, celebrating resilience and memory.
Brandon’s childhood dream of becoming a professional basketball player has evolved into a broader exploration of basketball’s cultural significance. His art reflects basketball as a social and cultural pillar, examining how our individual and collective experiences shape and connect us.
Among the standout pieces is the artist’s series of “Basketball Blooms.” Shipp transforms found basketballs into sculptural floral arrangements. These works ingeniously blend the everyday with the natural world, offering a fresh perspective on familiar objects and their latent meanings.
Shipp’s “Coach’s Playbook” series is a body of screenprints depicting courtroom floor plans enhanced with basketball team plays in red and blue, noting commentary on the reality related to the American legal system.
The artist uses repurposed t-shirts as a canvas for his latest series of framed paintings, finishing with collage and airbrush techniques.
“Reconstructs” invites viewers to engage with art and challenge traditional and contemporary methodology boundaries. The exhibition runs from September 3rd to October 12th, 2024, with a reception and dialogue with Brandon J. Donahue-Shipp on September 6th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
