Hyatt Centric Center City Philadelphia is ready to honor Black History Month in grand style with the return of its Black History Month Showcase 2025, part of its Maker Series. This year’s group art show, curated by Ginger Rudolph of Mural Arts Philadelphia, will captivate art lovers, locals, and visitors with an array of multimedia works by five Black Philadelphia-based artists.
Opening on Thursday, January 23, the showcase will begin with a Meet the Makers reception from 6 to 8 p.m. You will enjoy complimentary light bites from Patchwork Restaurant and à la carte craft cocktails. The showcase will remain open to the public through mid-March, so you will have ample opportunity to immerse yourself in the art and stories that define the exhibit.
Curator Ginger Rudolph has selected a lineup of artists who push boundaries and challenge norms. Her approach reflects the ethos of this exhibition—not chasing trends but amplifying voices that create lasting impact. “These are voices that create impact and shape their communities, celebrating depth, thoughtfulness, and authenticity,” Rudolph said.
The exhibit will feature a variety of disciplines, including paintings, photography, illustrations, sculpture, and mixed media, offering a dynamic perspective on identity, culture, and community. The participating artists are:
Shawn Theodore is a celebrated photographer exploring themes of identity and culture. His work has been featured in major collections, including the Whitney Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Jordan Plain is known for blending poetry, graphic design, and abstract art. His “Poetic Palettes” series marries vibrant colors with poignant storytelling.
Yannick Lowery is an interdisciplinary artist incorporating collage, animation, and sculpture into his thought-provoking works that explore cultural legacies and personal narratives.
Emilio Maldonado is a Dominican Republic-born artist whose work critiques consumer culture while reflecting on material culture and memory through various mediums.
Shakira Hunt is a photographer and visual artist whose projects explore emotional healing and identity, such as “Give Me My Flowers” and “Soft Petals.”
In addition to the exhibition, Black History Month Showcase 2025 offers two key events to deepen the experience. On January 23, the aforementioned Meet the Makers Reception and the Hear the Makers Panel Discussion on Wednesday, February 12. This lively conversation will feature the artists and will be moderated by Elizabeth Wellington, culture reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m.
With pieces that challenge perspectives and reflect profound authenticity, the Black History Month Showcase 2025 underscores the vital role of art in storytelling and connection. Elizabeth Fricke, Director of Sales & Marketing at Hyatt Centric, notes, “We’re honored to collaborate with such an immensely talented selection of Black artists in the Philadelphia area on our second Maker Series group show honoring Black History Month.”
