West Chester’s Bam Margera was recently fired from the production of Jackass 4. And there are no pranks or goofs to blame.
Bam Margera needs our help.
In my time, I have written often about West Chester native and self-proclaimed stunt/prank goof Margera and his family. From one long 21st Century MTV series, “Jackass”, and its accompanying three films, (or and a half if you count Jackass 3D and Jackass 3.5), to his Viva La Bam series. The latter with willingly unwitting parents Phil and April and his uncle Don Vito… To his time as a painter with “Bam Margera & Friends”. To his time as a saloon entrepreneur in his hometown. “I’ve spent tons of money at bars in West Chester on me and my friends my whole life. I figured I might as well open my own… Mine might be the only place left in town where you can smoke,” Magera once said. We grew through the 2000s with his antics.
“I like doing a whole bunch of stuff and seeing what sticks,” Margera told me, once upon a time, from Toronto, on the set of Bam Margera Presents: Where the ♯$&% Is Santa? “I like directing, editing, making movies. So I do that.”
As of this morning, we’re hearing that the actor/skateboarder has been officially fired from the still-filming production of Jackass 4, just days after he announced through several different social media outlets that he was seeking treatment for mental health issues and alcoholism. Several outlets are reporting that the now 41-year-old Margera won’t be part of J4 because he broke his contract by not getting his addiction issues taken care of before production’s start. Others assume he was removed from the production as he went on several Instagram rants late last week. And told devoted audiences to boycott the film, due for September release with original Jackasses Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O.
This is no time to kick a man when he’s down.
Whether you have been a fan of the antics put forth by Bam in films such as Jackass and Minghags, or series such as Vive La Bam, or just amused by their pranks’ stupidity, or not, there is a brand of public suffering going on here that must be tended to by those he’s most embraced. The people he grew up around. Though Bam no longer lives in West Chester County or boards these slopes and tracks, he’s a townie and needs a leg up.
“I’m not in ‘Jackass 4’ and if anybody cares about me, don’t go see their movie because I will make mine way fucking radder if you just Venmo me a dollar,” he said in his first volley of videos on Instagram. And while I’m not suggesting you send him money, necessarily, I am insisting that you send him messages of positive reinforcement and care. Something positive in this his time of psychic need.
