The Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim Festival Block Party plans to take over Fishtown and the Philadelphia Folk Festival celebrates 60 years.
From this week’s first Fishtown live Night Market since the pandemic to gearing up for June’s two-day Roots Picnic across the bucolic Mann Center lawns to next week’s Italian Market Ninth Street fest, you can’t throw a rock and not hit a bunch of people outside and partying. This morning, news got dropped on two most auspicious festivals, one brand new, and one ages old as well as a Philly tradition. For the new, there is the announcement of the animated Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim Festival Block Party making its East Coast debut this summer in Philadelphia, August 5 through 7.
Together with all the Rick and Morty fans (who can expect a season 6 surprise during the block party), Live Nation and Adult Swim join forces for a curated, three day series of individually ticketed events within the Fishtown triangle –Fillmore Philly, The Foundry, Punch Line Philly and Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia – where Philly’s Tierra Whack, Killer Mike and ELp’s Run the Jewels, Hop Along, DJ Diamond Kuts, and Dethrock and will be the musical headliners, with visions of Aqua Teen Hunger Force co-stars such as Frylock and Master Shake set to dance in your head.
“After several successful years in LA and online, we’re excited to bring the Adult Swim Festival to the East Coast,” wrote Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim in an email. “Fishtown is the perfect setting for what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of the city, Adult Swim and top talent who are at the forefront of the music and comedy worlds.”
In order to speak to tradition, and for its 60th anniversary, the Philadelphia Folk Festival just announced its most bizarre and biggest soiree on the grounds of Old Pool Farm, August 18-21.
The oldest continuously run outdoor music festival in North America, is going weird with an initial headling lineup of Michael Franti and Spearhead, Punch Brothers (reviving their American Acoustic ensemble alongside Watchhouse and Sarah Jarosz), recent AMA-nominees The War and Treaty, plus Aoife O’Donovan, Hiss Golden Messenger and Arrested Development. This is a very funky Folk Fest indeed.
