The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2022 Nominations were announced… Still no Chubby Checker!
So the nominations for The Class of 2022 to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame came in way early this morning. We got Beck, Duran Duran, Eminem, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon and A Tribe Called Quest making their first appearances as potential inductees into the Rock Hall. With that seven joining ten artists who have been previously nominated for the Hall in past years and got on the ballot again: Pat Benatar, Kate Bush, DEVO, Eurythmics, Judas Priest, Fela Kuti, MC5, the New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine and Dionne Warwick.
The first obvious question, as always, is why the fuck isn’t the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Philadelphia as it was supposed to be instead of Cleveland where it stands? I know that we can’t retroactively rip a large physical property out of its literal roots in Cleveland. But Philly can whine and has whined about this forever.
The second obvious question, as always, is how is it that one of Rock and Roll’s principal old school architects, South Philly’s Chubby Checker, the man who made “The Twist” into Rock and Roll’s first genuine dance craze, still not on any ballots? Not one. Never. Ever. Hell, he even followed “The Twist,” up with another big dance craze hit, “Pony Time” then another one, with “Limbo Rock”. What’s a man got to do?
Sure, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame gives fans the opportunity to participate in the induction selection process with the 2022 induction fan vote. Starting on Wednesday, February 2 and running through April 29, fans can vote and vote and vote every day at vote.rockhall.com. The top five nominated artists, as selected by the internet public, will comprise a fans’ ballot to be tallied along with music industry professionals’ ballots in selecting all of the 2022 inductees.
I would have to guess that while, say, last year’s inductee, finally, Todd Rundgren from Upper Darby had a gazillion industry pros behind him, like KISS, Rundgren slipped in due to his rabid, longtime, devoted fan base. So Philly, hit the buttons, repeatedly, at vote.rockhall.com for Ernest “Chubby Checker” Evans, and let’s fuck up the system. We got Hall & Oates, The Mighty Three (Gamble, Huff & Bell), Jerry Blavat, and a few others in the Hall. It’s Pony Time.
